RenewableUK Cymru, the trade association representing the renewable energy industry in Wales, has welcomed today’s unveiling of a full-scale tidal power generator by Tidal Energy Ltd in Pembrokeshire.

Tidal Energy Ltd’s DeltaStream unit will be installed off the coast of Pembrokeshire at Ramsey Sound later this summer for a 12 month trial.  During its deployment, the device will be connected to the local distribution network, allowing the electricity generated by it to contribute to the renewable energy targets of the Welsh Government.  It is the first full scale tidal device to be deployed in Welsh waters and over 70 Welsh companies have been involved in its development.

Dr David Clubb, Director of RenewableUK Cymru, said: “Wales has fantastic renewable energy resources and the unveiling of Tidal Energy Ltd’s DeltaStream device clearly demonstrates another stride forward by the tidal energy sector and consolidates the importance of Wales in this field.  The opportunities DeltaStream offers are highly significant to the local community and to the wider supply chain.  As the First Minister has said, this is a landmark project, creating jobs and helping meet green energy targets.  I sincerely hope this is just the beginning for tidal energy in Wales.”
