The Mid Wales (Powys) Conjoined Wind Farms Public Inquiry is now drawing to a close, and the next stage – the Inspector’s recommendation – begins. Dr David Clubb, Director of RenewableUK Cymru, said:

“This Public Inquiry has been an opportunity to highlight the substantial economic benefits which could arise from the proposed developments, including long-term sustainable employment for local people. It has also been a chance to provide clarity on a number of issues, which has resulted in objections being removed.

“However, the cost of the Inquiry to Powys County Council and ultimately local taxpayers cannot be ignored, especially as the Council has now removed many of its objections. One cannot help but wonder if there could have been a more expedient and cost-effective way for decision-makers to reach an understanding about the merits of the case. The costs and timescales embedded in this process demonstrate the value in the planning reform which is currently being undertaken by Welsh Government.

“A significant positive to come out of the Inquiry is the growth of the Powys Windfarm Supporters group, who have worked hard to ensure there has been a more balanced debate and to show their support for onshore wind projects in Mid Wales.
“It is now down to the Inspector to make his recommendation to the Secretary of State. We look forward to hearing the conclusion, and to working closely with the local authority, community groups, businesses and industry to maximise the huge benefits which could result from these clean, iconic developments in the ‘Canolbarth’.”
