Today’s report from the Welsh Affairs Committee calling for clarity about the costs of Wylfa Newydd is encouraging news for the renewables sector.
The 48-page report makes a number of recommendations, including:
- The Government negotiates a strike price for Wylfa Newydd below that agreed for Hinkley Point C, and competitive with renewable sources such as onshore wind
- The Government provides a clear and comprehensive explanation of how the lifetime cost of energy sources are compared, in particular how it compares new nuclear with renewable alternatives
- UK and Welsh Governments should work with Anglesey and Gwynedd County Council to progress other aspects (other than nuclear) of the Energy Island programme
David Clubb, Director of RenewableUK Cymru, said:
“The Government has been clear that both nuclear and renewables will play a key role in the generation of electricity for the future. Onshore wind is the cheapest form of electricity generation; we need to maximise its contribution in order to reduce fuel poverty and provide cost-effective power for our homes, businesses and industry.
