OFGEM today announced its new regime which is intended to incentivise new interconnectors to improve the UK’s access to mainland Europe’s markets.

David Clubb, Director of RenewableUK Cymru, said:

“This is great news for the long-term development of the renewable energy sector, and for the prices people pay for their electricity. The UK currently has just 4GW of interconnector capacity which will be insufficient to import and export the cheap but variable generation from renewables. This needs to be closer to 20GW to enable the system to function at its best.”
